The city itself
Plant City is an incorporated city in Hillsborough County and part of the Tampa Bay area, with a 2020 census population of 39,764. It is known as the winter strawberry capital of the world and hosts the annual Florida Strawberry Festival, and Wish Farms — the largest strawberry producer in Florida — has a large presence in the city. Hillsborough County Public Schools operate all public schools in Plant City, the Quintilla Geer Bruton Memorial Library, built in 1960, is in Plant City, and both railroad tracks through town are owned and run by CSX.
In the city, or out in unincorporated Hillsborough?
More than two thirds of Hillsborough County's residents live in unincorporated areas, so a Plant City-area rental may sit outside the city limits; it pays to know which side of the line you are on. As of the 2020 census, more than two thirds of Hillsborough County residents lived in unincorporated areas, which fall under the jurisdiction of the county board of commissioners, and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue serves those unincorporated areas. Alafia River State Park and Hillsborough River State Park are both in the county, and Tampa International Airport is the county's primary commercial airport; Tampa Executive near Brandon, Peter O. Knight near downtown Tampa and Plant City Airport are the other airports in the county.
